Webster defines “stewardship” as
1 : the office, duties, and obligations of a steward
2 : the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially : the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care <stewardship of our natural resources>
I would like to hope I will be remembered as a steward of my breed. It is not an easy road to travel.
In particular in breeding dogs, there are often hard decisions to be weighed. I always try to consider decisions I make about my dogs, and especially about breeding them, with the impact that it will have on my breed in mind.
I’ve said since I first entered the dog world that my own personal hopes and goals for my dogs must always come second to what is best for the BREED.
To this end, I have tried to have my friendly well manners dogs in the public eye on a regular basis to show the public what a correct Rottweiler is. I have been very careful with regard to temperament and breeding. I have washed several dogs out of my breeding program for temperament and health reasons. This is almost never an easy decision, but again, what is best for my breed must come first.
I’ve been lucky over the years to have some outstanding mentors. Bob Busby… Cathy Rubens… Linda Draper… Lori Gach… Steve and Theresa Robinson… Marge Gold… Bert Halsey…to name just a few. These folks have helped me immensely over the years in my journey of learning about this breed.
While my breeding program had a rather rough start, it looks now to be on a cheerful path, mostly thanks to Linda Draper trusting me with an excellent promising puppy who grew into a fine specimen and fabulous brood bitch.
Altho I am deeply disappointed that Penny is not in whelp, I am inspired by the promise that young Grace is showing, and so looking forward to having her in the show ring later this year. Her temperament is outstanding. She is bright, stable, intelligent, friendly, and very confident with excellent working drive. Definitely a product of her pedigree!
Grace will be making her debut later this spring. I am betting that she finishes her CH titles quickly, and we will then be moving on to the working rings, so look out! :D
