I have some adorable photos to post, and also some very sad news. Isobel passed away on Sunday morning. Puppies were fed, and were all down sleeping, and I was about to get out of the whelping box when she woke from sleep screaming, seizing, and urinating. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to save her, and she died in my hands within moments. I cannot express the level of my shock and devastation. On necropsy, little Isobel had a grossly enlarged heart and liver. This is assumed to be a congenital defect. None of the other puppies share the same problem. This is a very sad part of being a breeder. I will never forget this sweet little puppy, and I miss her every time I’m in the box and now only count 6 puppies.

In other news, Penny has produced her 6th OFA excellent offspring. Out of 15 puppies total, she has produced 6 OFA excellent and 4 OFA good.

The remaining 6 are doing very very well. Here they are at 3.5 weeks.

Something special is about to happen for me as a Breeder. Something that has taken me an unusually long time to achieve. After almost 25 years in my chosen breed of the Rottweiler, I am about to whelp my first homebred litter. The first litter from a bitch that I planned, bred, whelped, raised, and trained.

This bitch, Gracie, is the culmination of the work of other breeders before me. Two in particular; Linda Draper, of Eternal Moon Rottweilers, and Cathy Rubens, of Silverhill Rottweilers.

I have been lucky to count these women and master Breeders as friends and mentors for a number of years.

The dam of this litter, Redyre Double Blessing, is out of my foundation bitch, 2X BIMBS U-CH 3X HIT U-CD CH Eternal Moon Finders Keepers CD RN TT TDI CGC TT. I purchased Penny from Linda on a co-ownership in October of 2004. I trained her, and exhibited her to all her titles. Penny has produced 3 litters totaling 15 puppies. I have bitches from her second and third litters. Grace is from Penny’s second litter, by Cathy’s dog, CH Silverhill’s Ice.

Because of the hours and hours of mentoring of these women, and their willingness to work with me in furthering my Breeding program, I now have the chance to go to the second generation.

It is a richly fulfilling experience to enjoy the view of my bitch in blooming health with her abdomen so clearly showing the burgeoning brood she is carrying.

It is one more step forward in my evolution as a Breeder, as a steward of my Breed. I have dreamed of this moment, and I have striven toward it since very early in my dog life.

If all goes well, soon there will be beautiful little bears in my whelping box, and eager prospective new owners will be delighting in the photographs and blog posts of the litter that contains their new dog.

I will be lost in the intensive labor of love that properly raising a litter is. It is my passion and my pleasure to put in the work it takes to keep puppies healthy, clean, groomed, socialized, and trained for their new families.

The day will arrive all too soon that the little bundles go to their new homes. And as always, my heart will swell with pride and joy, and crack a little with sadness as each one leaves to start their new lives with their owners.

It’s why we do it. One of the whys, anyway.
